A UK website dedicated to the promotion of hand knitting. Simple diagrams from the UK HandKnitting website show how to cast on, knit and cast off.

2Learn2Knit:
A website dedicated to get everyone in the UK knitting, with step by step guides on how to knit basic stitches and also a range of other basic techniques, such as buttonholes and making up pieces. Learn2Knit is sponsored by a number of the UK's major yarn retailers and includes knitting and crochet stitches.

Books:

1. Rowan:
Rowan is a leading quality yarn supplier based in Holmfirth, in West Yorkshire. Rowan sells a wide range of premium quality yarns in natural fibres and blends and is extremely well supported by its knitting magazines, issued twice a year, together with smaller magazines supporting each range of yarns.The main magazines contain knitting tips and techniques 

The Rowan website also offers tutorials on various stitches and has a number of books on how to knit and also books to get kids to join in too.

2. Debbie Bliss
Debbie Bliss is the foremost knitwear designer for babies and children working today.Debbie has published a number of books on learning to knit.

In Beginner Baby Knits book, Debbie guides you through all the basic techniques and features essential knitting steps for each design. 

Debbie's How to Knit is also an extremely clear and concise book, with lots of pictures and diagrams, with 15 easy projects to try from cloting to home accents.

3. Other recommended books:

Stitch 'n Bitch Handbook: Instructions, Patterns, and Advice for a New Generation of Knitters. 
Full of funky modern designs and easy to read and undertsand instructions, but this is published in US, so recommended yarns are from the States. 


Ultimate Knitting Bible: A Complete Reference with Step-by-step Techniques by Sharon Brant.
This book will suit beginners and experienced knitters with sections including Basics; Structure and Shaping; Embellishments and Professional Finishing Techniques. If you only want to buy only one book to see you through many years, then this is the one to choose.

and for kids:
Kids Learn to Knit 
For children aged 7- 10 years, clear concise instructions and it also shows how to do french knitting.


Magazines:

Most magazines have a section describing knitting techniques, from basics to more complicated stitches. Here a few of the most popular magazines, which also have website with more archived information.


1. Simply Knitting (UK)

2. Let's Knit (UK)
Let's Knit website has an archive of videos of how to knit various stitches and kniting techniques.

3. Knitting (UK)
Handy step by step guide from the website in association with the Knitting Institute.

4. Vogue Knitting (US)
VK was launched 25 years ago, the flagship knitting magazine of SoHo publishing, a world leader in craft magine and book publishing. Issued quarterly in print and it is also available on the website and here you can find basic knitting techniques, and there is quite an extensive stitch library too.
 
Other websites you may find useful:

1. KnittingHelp.com
With free knitting videos there is lots to choose from: for the beginner to more advanced knitting techniques. A very useful website, it shows both the English and Continental style of knitting.  

2. Videojug
Lots of videos on knitting and loads of other stuff too.
