A highly recommended book which explains yarns, hooks, UK and US terminologies and particularly useful, instructions for left and right handed people.

Stitch 'n Bitch Crochet: The Happy Hooker (Stich 'n Bitch Crochet)
by Debbie Stoller
Well written and clearly explained, with plenty of cool designs and instructions for left handed and right handed workers. However the recommended yarns are American, so you will need to find UK equivalents, but an excellent book.
