Ethical policy

Consideration for the environment influences all our processes at Serenity Knitting, from the careful selection of products for our online shop, through to the packaging and delivery process.

We feel very strongly that the environment is in our stewardship only and we should nuture and care for that environment so that it remains a source of beauty and wonder to our grandchildren as well as continuing to provide a plentiful supply of all our resource requirements for many hundreds of centuries to come. We all play a part in this task, but together can influence public thinking, and there is often no better way, than through our spending choices.

Each of our creations may take many hours of work and involve a careful choice in colour, yarn and fibre content, so its good to know that its production process has not harmed the environment and the yarn will be soft and gentle against our skin, particularly for sensitive and baby skin.

We aim to source products which make maximum use of natural fibres and have a production and dyeing process which has minimal impact on the environment. Natural fibres are from sustainable sources wherever possible, with minimal use of chemicals to reduce risk of allergies and skin sensitivities. Organic ranges are actively sought and details of the processes can be found on our website or via links to the manufacturer’s website. We actively promote the bioRe® organically certified textile chain, which now supplies organic cotton to both the Rowan and Debbie Bliss ranges.

We endeavour to source 100% natural fibre content, in particular for our luxury range of products. However, a number of the product ranges will have some component of artificial fibres, to make them more durable and machine washable for instance for baby wear or for harder wearing items such as socks, and this is unavoidable.

We also promote yarns produced in developing countries, where the production of the yarn and its sale throughout  the rest of the world,  enables small rural communities to generate a reasonable, living wage. This in turn allows each community to develop in its own way, to build and expand educational and health facilities and promote further development. See our Mirasol range.

Packing materials are kept to a minimum by recycling plastic bags, using bags made from recycled plastic or using biodegradable bags.

Low environmental impact packaging

While keeping packaging materials to a minimum, we are offering you the option of having your goods delivered in used recycled plastic bags or in newly recycled bags. The choice is up to you. Our used recycled bags will be bags which have previously been used in other delivery processes and have simply been re-labelled to send on to you. This will keep costs down for you and us and the reduced costs will be reflected in the delivery charge. If you are purchasing for a gift, you may wish to have your gift delivered in a bag made from recycled plastic (i.e. not previously used in its current form), we are also happy to do this at your request.

The recycled mailing bags we use are made from a minimum of 80 % recycled plastic and will biodegrade when exposed to UV light.

As plastic recycling facilities are not yet available in all areas, you at least now know that these plastic bags will degrade much faster in landfill than conventional plastic bags. This is why our preferred option is to recycle bags where possible and keep them out of landfill sites, by continually reusing them.
